Seize Today Artist Residency (STAR)

Seize Today Artist Residency (Star):

This remote artist residency helps busy artists carve out more time and space for art-making. Balancing day jobs, childcare, chores, and commutes often pushes studio time to the back burner. Through live Zoom sessions, STAR provides actionable projects to kick off a month of dedicated creation alongside like-minded peers. Workshop themes include: Reclaiming time, habit building, and new fast art-making methods and other ways to better sustain creative flow in an art practice. At the conclusion of the residency, artists join for an open studio and debrief in a cozy relaxing retreat setting of the artists' choosing.

The Residency features:

  • Four Sunday night Zoom workshops: Each session includes brief introductions, practical crash courses with lectures, time-optimizing strategies, and projects. Residents connect, problem-solve and exchange ideas with peers. Peer brainstorming: Dedicated collaborative documents and discussions to identify, troubleshoot, and solve common logistical and creative hurdles.

  • 30-day tailored art-making launch: A personalized blueprint initiated in zoom Session 1 that shapes a realistic production schedule around your unique daily routine.

  • Time-optimization Toolkit: A curated resource kit given to residents to help them reclaim time, restructure their routines, find time-hacks and form lasting creative habits. Tangible materials will be in a Digital Workbook, Art Share and Problem solving space for resources.

  • Optional peer studio swap: A 1-on-1 studio visit with a fellow resident, conducted via Zoom or in person. Organizers match residents with similar artistic backgrounds or locations whenever possible.

  • Final retreat and open studio: A concluding Zoom session combining a virtual open studio, debrief on optimizing time moving forward, + retreat plan.

Why I am creating this residency:

I have interviewed 35+ busy artist parents and researched how overwhelmed artists with day jobs have made time for their work, so you don’t have to. I used what I learned to create a solo show of paintings while juggling a second pregnancy, postpartum, 2 young children, college teaching, and still had time for friends, beautiful trips and gardening. I have exciting methods and tools to help every artist to optimize the little time they have. I find most residencies impossible to go to, as an artist mother. I wanted to create a doable residency space for other artists looking for a residency that works for any schedule. I am excited to see how this residency month impacts it’s first collective of residents.

Warm wishes,

Hilary Doyle
